Who can be my Guarantor?

Almost anyone can act as your Guarantor; it can be a family member, a friend or a work colleague, but not your wife/husband. They will need to be aged 21-80 and have a good credit history.

  • Step 1: Make a shortlist of the most suitable people

Make a shortlist of your closest family or very good friends. A parent, sister or brother, aunt or uncle or possibly a grandparent are all acceptable. Your husband/wife CANNOT be a Guarantor for you.

  • Step 2: Narrow down list to suitable guarantor

Now narrow down your list and select one preferred potential Guarantor and one as a reserve. They must know you well, trust you and be willing and in a position to meet your loan commitments if ever the need arises. Consider their financial position and personal circumstances, are they likely to be able to offer support if the need ever arises?

  • Step 3: Think about their financial stability

Think about their financial stability and suitability. Do they own their own home? If so, your application is far more likely to be accepted. If they are a tenant or they live with parents they will need a good credit history.

  • Step 4: Talk to your first choice

Talk to your first choice, explaining what you're asking them to do by becoming your Guarantor. Then point them to our web site. Ensure they understand their responsibilities, including the possible financial risks if you struggle to make a payment and we would suggest that they read through our Being a Guarantor page.
